A Crankie is an old form of storytelling.
It is a long, illustrated scroll that is wound onto two spools. The spools are loaded into a box that has a viewing screen.
The scroll is hand-cranked (hence the name) while the story is being told. As a fiber artist, I changed the medium of the scroll.
Instead of using paper and drawn images or shadow puppets, I use canvas for the scroll and felt applique for the images.
My stories are mostly from or about my life experiences, such as the one I created about ‘Coming to America.’
